While L.A. County’s Count Climbs, WeHo’s COVID-19 Infections Have Slowed

The number of infections reported each day (shown in orange) has leveled out in recent weeks.

In West Hollywood, the growth rate of confirmed COVID-19 infections seems to have flattened since April 24. From that date to today, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department has reported only one to two new infections each day in WeHo, and on some days none.  As of today, a total of 146 West Hollywood residents are confirmed to have been infected with the virus, an increase of two from yesterday’s count.

In March and early April there were bigger daily jumps in the number of confirmed infections, with an increase of eight on March 24 and 28 and April 1 and 4 and an increase of 10 on March 7. The leveling of the number of daily infections may reflect increased adherence by local residents to social distancing rules, although that can’t be confirmed.

The number of confirmed infections reported each day from all of Los Angeles County hasn’t flattened as much as it has in West Hollywood. That is illustrated in the chart below based on data from the Public Health Department’s online database.

Los Angeles County COVID-19-related deaths and infections.

Yesterday was the launch of the beginning Stage Two of the state’s five-stage “roadmap to recovery,” which describes a phased approach to relaxing select directives of the state Safer at Home order and a reopening process for certain business sectors. As of yesterday, bookstores, florists, music stores, toy stores, apparel retailers, sporting goods stores, and car dealerships could open for business, but for curbside pickup only. Golf courses and most hiking trails have opened today (Runyon Canyon, however, will remain closed.)

Later in Stage Two the state is expected to allow the reopening of offices for businesses whose employees cannot work from home, to allow seated dining at restaurants and to allow the opening of shopping malls and outdoor museum. However, those openings aren’t yet certain and no specific date has been set.

Counties can move farther along into Stage Two if they meet certain state public health criteria, which Los Angeles County is unlikely to meet soon. That criteria includes having no more than on COVID-19 infection case per 10,000 people in last 14 days and no related deaths during that period, being able to test a minimum of 1.5 of every 1,000 residents each day, and being able to house at least 15% of the county’s homeless residents.

Los Angeles County, which a population of 10 million, has accounted for more than half California’s more than 2,500 virus deaths.

In its report today, the Health Department said there have been 1,011 new confirmed COVID-19 infections countywide, bringing the total to 31,197. There have been 44 new deaths, bringing that total to 1,512. Four West Hollywood residents have died thus far.

Thirty-four people who died were over the age of 65 and seven were between the ages of 41 and 65. One person who died was between the ages of 18 and 40. Twenty-nine people had underlying health conditions including 25 people over the age of 65 and four people between the ages of 41 to 65.

The Health Department’s COVID-19 database continues to report that only 704 West Hollywood residents have been tested for the virus, which, as WEHOville has reported earlier, is almost certainly inaccurate since that figure has not been updated for several weeks. The Health Department has expanded its mobile testing sites with some operated by Optum Serve and Verily Life Sciences. The closest of the 20 locations is on Alden Drive at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Some WeHo residents have reported that Cedars-Sinai appointments have been unavailable recently because of the surge in applications. Applications for testing can be made online. https://covid19.lacounty.gov/testing/

The number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills as of today increased by three to 118. The number of infections in Culver City grew by four to 94. The Hollywood neighborhood had seven new confirmed infections, bringing its total to 213. The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by six to a total of 406.

The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when in contact with others from outside your household.

Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.

Residents with questions about the COVID-19 pandemic and who are looking for resources to deal with it can find answers on the City of West Hollywood’swebsite. Here is a list of links to sections about particular issues:

Gatherings are still happening. People in supermarkets are not wearing their masks properly – not covering their noses. Some are still not wearing masks at all. We are not over this by a long shot. We are opening up too early.

Nothing will crystalize the immediacy or seriousness of the coronavirus like this documentary tonight from NHK Tokyo tracking the Diamond Princess as a case study. Reading statistics and listening to instructions from a variety of sources without visuals does not give an accurate picture. This is very complicated and there is no secret weapon.
