COVID-19 Infections Flat in WeHo, But Now Grocery Store Employees Are Affected

The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood today remained steady at yesterday’s count of 139

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 781 new confirmed COVID-19 infections, bringing the total to 25,662. There have been 21 new deaths, bringing that total to 1,229. With one additional death reported, the number of West Hollywood residents have died from the virus now totals three.

Fifteen people who died were over the age of 65, three were between the ages of 41 and 65. The health department did not reveal the ages of the other three who died. Eleven people had underlying health conditions including 10 people over the age of 65 and one person between the ages of 41 and 65.

Beverly Hills saw two new infections, bringing its total to 112. The number of infections in Culver City remained steady at 67. The Hollywood neighborhood had two new confirmed infections, bringing its total to 198. The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by 12 to a total of 375.

The Health Department also reported that five employees of the Bristol Farms grocery store at 9039 Beverly Blvd., in West Hollywood have been confirmed as infected with the COVID-19 virus. And 21 employees of the Ralphs grocery store at 7257 W. Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles are infected.

Ralphs, also known as “Rock and Roll Ralphs,” says it has deep-cleaned the store several times. It requires all employees to wear gloves and now is providing masks. It has installed plastic shields at its checkout counters.

Bristol Farms said that it has thoroughly sanitized the entire store and contacted those who worked in close contact with the infected employee. Its policy is to place them on quarantine for 14 days. The infected employee will remain off work until at least seven days have passed after symptoms first appearedandthree days after recovery (meaning that fever has been gone for 72 hours without use of medication and respiratory symptoms have subsided.

In its announcement of the latest count of confirmed infections, the Health Department said that as it plans to relax some of the previsions of the Safer at Home Order, businesses and residents will need to continue to observe and practice physical distancing requirements and take infection control precautions. “Increased interactions between LA County residents and workers can increase the risk and rate of transmission of COVID-19 within the community. Health Officer orders and directives will still continue to ensure it is safe for as many people to be able to work as possible while still slowing the spread of COVID-19 to prevent an overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases at healthcare facilities.”

The Health Department announcement included an update by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on its guidance on how long people who are positive for COVID-19 should self-isolate. New evidence suggests it may take longer for the virus to shed, which means that an infected person may be able to infect other people for a longer period of time than was initially thought.

People who are positive or presumed positive for COVID-19 should now self-isolate for 10 days and 72 hours after fever and symptoms subside. This means you must stay home until your fever has resolved without the use of fever-reducing medications and there is improvement in your respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath) for at least 3 days (72 hours) after recovery, and at least 10 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared or you were tested. If you have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 or is presumed to be infected with COVID-19, you must quarantine for 14 days from your last contact with that individual. If you begin experiencing symptoms, you must self-isolate for 10 days and 72 hours after fever and symptoms subside. Individuals who are elderly or who have underlying health conditions may be at higher risk of serious illness and should contact their doctor as soon as they are sick.

The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when in contact with others from outside your household.

Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.

Residents with questions about the COVID-19 pandemic and who are looking for resources to deal with it can find answers on the City of West Hollywood’swebsite. Here is a list of links to sections about particular issues:

Testing is not available for those without cars. I had symptoms in late March and live near the Weho Target. I could not get tested because the closest testing site at the time was near Dodger Stadium and even now the closest is at Cedars-Sinai and to get there would require exposing my possible infection to two rideshare drivers or if I did not have it, exposing myself to getting infected by rideshare, so I stayed home. Since bus and metro riders tend to be in the million daily ride count I know I’m not alone in not being able… Read more »

Given that the employees are dealing with a multitude of customers all day it would seem as though the employees of Bristol Farms and Ralphs should be tested. Have they been? And if not why not? It just takes one to get the ball rolling…….. in the right or wrong direction.
