While the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections in Los Angeles County continued to climb today, those in West Hollywood remained flat at 107. That means one of every 344 residents is confirmed to have the virus,
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed 40 new deaths and 567 new cases county wide. Twenty-eight people who died were over the age of 65; eight people who died were between the ages of 41 to 65 years old; one death occurred to a person between the ages of 18 to 40 years old; and one death is under investigation. Twenty-six people had underlying health conditions; nine people over the age of 65 and two people between the ages of 41 to 65 years old had no reported underlying health conditions.
To date, the Health Department has identified 11,391 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of Los Angeles County, and a total of 495 deathsAs of today, 3,014 people who tested positive for COVID-19 (26% of positive cases) have been hospitalized at some point during their illness. Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with testing results available for over 74,000 individuals and 14% of people testing positive.
For the third day in a row, the number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills remains at 78. The number of confirmed infections in Culver City remains at 36, the same count as on Thursday. One new infection was reported of a resident of Hollywood, which now has 126 confirmed infections, and the number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by five to a total of 228 today.
Confirmed infections in the Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles increased from 51 on Thursday to 56 today. Little Armenia continues to have the highest infection rate of the 335 cities and communities surveyed by the Health Department, with 695.82.51 of every 100,000 residents infected. The Crestview neighborhood has seen no increase in the 45 infections reported as of Thursday and remains the second most highly infected area, with 395.85 confirmed infections per 100,000 residents. The number of confirmed infections in Rancho Dominguez remains at eight, or 300.64 per 100,000 residents, making it the third most highly infected community. West Hollywood is now the fourth most highly infected community, with 289.57 residents per 100,000 having a confirmed COVID-19 infection.
With the county’s expansion of testing sites, more than 70,000 people have been tested for the virus as of today, with 11% of them testing positive. The county also has loosed conditions for qualifying for same-day tests, which formerly were reserved for those with symptoms of an infection who were 65 or older or had an underlying health condition such as heart disease. Those who want to be tested now must only exhibit symptoms of a possible infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood is on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when out in the public procuring or providing essential services. N95 and surgical masks should only be used by healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers providing care for people who are ill. The current Health Officer Order extends the previous Health Officer Order through May 15 and requires essential businesses to provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited. Slowing the spread of COVID-19 requires that the public adhere to all the directives that limit interactions with those outside their households.
Public Health reminds everyone that if you are ill, even with mild symptoms, please self- isolate at home for 7 days and until you are fever and symptom free for 72 hours. If you have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 or is presumed to be infected with COVID-19, you must quarantine for 14 days from your last contact with that individual. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or are pregnant may be at higher risk of serious illness and should contact their doctor as soon as they are sick.
