March is Women’s History Month, and the City of West Hollywood is ready to support it with a series of events, beginning Sunday.
Here is a list of what will be happening during Women’s History Month, which was officially designated as such by Congress in 1987 and is intended to honor women’s contributions in American history:
MARCH 3 (Sunday)
International Women’s Day Celebration
This is a free celebration co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and the city’s Russian Advisory Board embracing the International Women’s Day theme “Balance for Better.” There will be music, dancing and refreshments celebrating women.

“Evolve. Women. Wisdom.”
This event celebrates the opening of “Evolve. Women. Wisdom.,” an exhibit curated by Lark Gallery that is intended to reflect the diversity of the community and is sponsored by the Russian Advisory Board and the city’s Arts Division. The exhibit is on view from March 3 to 24 on Tuesdays through Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be master classes on Sunday, March 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with artists. The event is free.

Breaking Barriers
At this event, “Real Life Lesbian, Pioneers in their Fields,” real life lesbians tell their own stories and the stories of those close to them at the June L. Mazer Archives, the largest major archive on the West Coast dedicated to preserving and promoting lesbian and feminist history and culture. The presents will include Dr. Marsha Epstein, who is one of the first women doctors working at the Women’s Clinic in Los Angeles in the early ’70s. Also presenting will be Wendy Averill, who will be presenting the collection of her ex, Phyllis Lambert, who is deceased. She will describe her history as an auction sales manager for California Thoroughbred Consultants and as a thoroughbred horse breeder, racehorse trainer

March 5
Women’s and Books Club Monthly Meeting
The WAB Club (Women and Books) is a monthly book club that meets to discuss books written by female authors. This month’s book is “Young Jane Young” by Gabrielle Zevin. The club is co-sponsored by the city’s Women’s Advisory Board and the West Hollywood Library. Attendance is free. Those attending are asked to RSVP online.

March 8
“Brave Girl Rising”
In celebration of National Women’s History Month, on International Women’s Day, the City of West Hollywood will host the premiere of the new short film “Brave Girl Rising,” by Girl Rising, the non-profit behind the global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment. This event includes guest speakers and

March 10
MashUp Dance Company Celebration
MashUp Dance Company is hosting this event in honor of International Women’s Day to celebrate strong women in dance and to educate, inspire and captivate dance lovers. The event will offer free dance classes, performances, a short film screening and a panel discussion with female artistic directors of L.A.-based dance companies. Those attending must RSVP online.

4th Annual Herstory Awards and Reception
In honor of Women’s History Month, Hollywood NOW presents its 4th annual “Herstory Awards” and reception. The event features toasts and roasts of this year’s honoree, Chela Demuir-Cartier, the founder of the Unique Woman’s Coalition, and all the work the coalition is

March 24
“A Woman’s Voice The Silence Breakers”
Five Senses Tastings and V Wine Room join forces with the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles for its annual Women’s History Month event in honor of noted female “silence breakers.” The event features music and a tasting of wine and chocolate. Admission is $60 and a portion of the proceeds from both events will benefit the League of Women Voters. Those attending must register online.

March 27
24th Annual West Hollywood Women in Leadership Awards
The City of West Hollywood, its Women’s Advisory Board and the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce present the 24th Annual Women in Leadership awards. This year’s honorees are Sherri Franklin, chief strategy officer, Muthatree WeHo; the Honorable Laura Friedman, California State Assembly; Annabeth Gish, actress and activist; Kamala Lopez, actress, activist and executive director of Equal Means Equal, and Maya Paley, director of advocacy and community engagement, National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles. The event is sponsored by The London West Hollywood, Le Pain Quotidian and Sweetzer Cellars. Admission is $15 and those attending are asked to register online.

Premiere of “She Angels”
This is the premiere of the new web series “She Angels,” a six-episode series featuring the riveting stories of the first year’s winners and an inside look at the She Angels Pitchfest competition that funds, mentors and empowers women entrepreneurs. There will be a party

Why can’t we have a Men’s Appreciation Day too? Men have made many very good contributions to Society. This is sexist. It has gotten to the point that Women don’t want equal rights, they want special rights.
