More than 100 transgender people and their supporters turned out Monday night for a rally at Los Angeles City Hall to protest a proposed move by the Trump Administration to remove their civil rights protections.

The rally’s speaker list included 21 people. Among them were prominent local activists such as Bamby Salcedo of the TransLatin@ Coalition, which hosted the event, Ashlee Marie Preston, Karina Samala of the Imperial Court of Los Angeles, Ezak Perez of Gender Justice LA and Maria Roman, chair of the TransLatin@ Coalition. Also on the list were actors and performers such as Laverne Cox; Mimz, musician, and Londyn, a hip hop artist.

In addition to impassioned speeches, the rally included some happy music, as can be seen in the video above.

The rally was in response to plans under discussion by the Trump Administration, first reported Sunday in The New York Times that “the Trump administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth, the most drastic move yet in a governmentwide effort to roll back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law.”
