More Than 100 People Turn Out for the World’s First Bisexual Pride March — in WeHo

Crowd gathers outside West Hollywood Auditorium to begin Bi Pride march.

More than 100 people marched yesterday up Robertson Boulevard and along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood’s Boystown gay nightlife area in what was billed as the world’s first bisexual pride event.

Bi Pride was co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood, the L.A. branch of the Human Rights Campaign and amBi LA, an organization of bisexual men and women in Los Angeles.

In addition to the parade, there was an event at West Hollywood Auditorium at which Mayor John Duran proclaimed the day as “Bisexual Celebration Day” and where artists Irene Suico Soriano and Torrey Mercer performed. Today is the 20th annual BiVisibility Day, aa worldwide celebration of bisexuality.

West Hollywood, where nearly 40% of the population is said to be composed of gay men, for many years has been home to the annual L.A. Pride parade and festival. Billed as an LGBT event, its events have focused largely on the gay community, with an increasing emphasis over the years on the lesbian and transgender communities.

The decades-long struggle for same-sex rights has seen the gay and lesbian communities band together and in recent years embrace the transgender community. The bisexual community has been less well-organized because it hasn’t faced government bias, although bisexual people do complain that they are treated with disdain by gay men. Bisexuals are people who have or are open to having sex with people of their own sex as well as people of the opposite sex.

Question… LA Pride expanded their scope to include bi, trans, questioning..
If Bisexuals are going to be having their own Pride parade..I assume the other sexualities will follow and everyone will have their own parades and celebrations. Will Gay Pride once gain just celebrate gays and since it looks like every group is going to want their own parade through town? And wouldn’t the money be better spent…as WehoFan said…by tackling the homeless problem..we have a growing Skid Row adjacent to our library. We’r spending millions of dollars on a new park and it’s becoming a homeless shelter.

Lots of opinions here, but few facts. There is already an LA Trans pride and a Lesbian event of similar scope. There is also a Black LGBT Pride and separate prides for Long Beach, the San Gabriel Valley, the San Fernando Valley, Orange County, Conejo Valley, and Antelope Valley. The city spent no direct money on this event, it came from the community itself. LA Pride serves a different function and does not compete with this bi event.

Thank you, this is true. Although it was co-sponsored by the City, which means they might have spent some money on it? Regardless, I cannot believe people are complaining about this. Bisexuals are a minority within a minority, just like trans people are. I know several bisexuals, and they are tired of most of the world (including the LGBTQ community) treating them like they don’t matter, or even exist (as in, the person just doesn’t want to admit he or she is homosexual). Events like this empower people to come out of the closet and live their lives as who… Read more »

When are they going to tackle the homeless problem? Residents don’t feel safe walking the streets and weho is spending money on another parade.
