“Shake Out, Don’t Freak Out.” That’s the slogan for tomorrow’s earthquake drill.
The drill offers advice on what to do in an earthquake and how to prepare for one, very important knowledge given that there’s a 60% chance the Los Angeles area will experience a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the next 30 years. Thus it’s much more likely that we’ll all experience that than that any one of us will win the Powerball lottery.
The Great Shakeout began in California in 2008. Since then, it has grown to include millions of people who will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold-on” during Great ShakeOut earthquake drills all over the world. Tomorrow’s is set to take place at 10:19 a.m. Information on how to participate is available online. And you can participate from home or work (businesses are encouraged to rally their employees for the online event).
Also on Saturday, Mike Carter and Jenny Kriendler will launch the new Ogden Drive Neighborhood Watch group on with an emergency preparedness meeting that will focus on earthquakes, wildfires, droughts and other dangerous situations.
That event will be at 10 a.m. at 1123 N. Ogden Drive. Those attending can participate in a raffle for a three-day survival kit donated by Tashman Hardware. Refreshments will be provided and public safety and city officials are expected to be there as well.
