The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will operate a checkpoint in West Hollywood from 7 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday to look for those driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or without licenses.

Dui_Checkpoint_4_500x300Such checkpoints are staged regularly as a measure to discourage people from driving while intoxicated. “Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely,” according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems, the Sheriff’s Department said. “A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.”

Drivers caught driving whilke impaired might face jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

I hope it’s somewhere where we can sit and have drinks while watching it like last time, very entertaining 🙂

Doesn’t sound like the checkpoint took station resources. From the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station Facebook page:

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Services Detail will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at an undisclosed location within the City of West Hollywood, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

Sounds like its a different group doing it.

Sheriff says ‘research shows’ DUI checkpoints work?!?!

no it does not

law abiding citizens should not be harassed as they go about they’re day by being forced to stop at any type checkpoint

its a wide net cast violating many citizens rights while gambling to catch a few criminals
no thanks

use education and probable cause stops to prevent dui’s

stopping all normal citizens because they happen to be there
is not probable cause

Does that mean there will be even fewer Deputies patrolling our streets than usual? There are too few radio cars at night anyways.
