Relay for LifeHundreds of people will gather Saturday and Sunday in West Hollywood for the Relay for Life to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers and to pay tribute to those for whom the cure did not come soon enough.

The event, which benefits the American Cancer Socieity, is an overnight celebration where people take turns walking, running or otherwise circling around a track “relay” style to raise money to fight cancer. Since 1985, Relay For Life has spread to more than 6,100 communities in the U.S. and has become a worldwide movement, taking place in more than 20 countries.

The West Hollywood opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m. Saturday at West Hollywood Elementary School, 970 N. Hammond St. between Harratt and Phyllis. The event will conclude on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Local entertainment and food vendors will take part in the event. Jeff Parshley, co-founder of NoH8 Campaign, will serve as this year’s honorary chair. The event will feature an open NoH8 photo shoot by founders Jeff Parshley and Adam Bouska, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society. One of the many highlights will be the luminaria ceremony, or candlelight vigil, held at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

Community partners for Relay For Life of West Hollywood include the Sunset Strip Business Association, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the National Organization of Women Hollywood Chapter. Contributing teams include Starbucks, Trader Joe’s, Yogurtland, Cake Couture 90210, the Women’s Advisory Board of the City of West Hollywood, KRAVE Jerky and Reebok Crossfit Lab.
