All services of the National Council of Jewish Women-Los Angeles  have now returned to its building, Council House, 543 N. Fairfax Ave. at Rosewood.

“We’re up and running, and it’s great to be back,” said Hillary Selvin, executive director of NCJW-LA.

Council House sustained extensive water damage in February, when a seam on a large rooftop water heater burst open. While extensive repairs were underway, some parts of the building were not accessible. As a result, some support groups and social work services were temporarily displaced. During that time, the City of West Hollywood and Jewish Family Services provided space for some NCJW services.

Now that most repairs are completed—some minor work is left, but nothing that will get in the way of normal operations, Selvin said—the agency has launched a campaign to raise money to fill the expected gap between the cost of the repairs and what insurance will cover.

Selvin said that NCJW does not know the exact amount of that difference because it takes time for insurance to be processed and paid out. However, she said, they know that insurance will not cover everything.

“We really thank the community for helping us fill that gap,” she said.

NCJW provides a variety of services to residents of West Hollywood and surrounding areas. They include tutoring and book giveaways for at-risk children, telephone counseling for women in distress, clothing assistance programs and emergency transportation for those who need to get to a hospital or clinic or a job interview or food bank. It also operates clothing thrift shops.
