The outbreak of fires in Southern California, which has resulted in houses on fire in communities as close as Bel Air, has prompted the City of West Hollywood to advise residents to sign up for updates on the progress of the fires.

While there is no immediate threat to the City of West Hollywood, keeping up with the progress of the fires is one way for residents to take action if that situation changes.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, which serves West Hollywood, is providing updates on Twitter @LACoFDPIO. They include details about telephone information lines that have been set up regarding specific fires and containment updates. Updates regarding the Skirball Fire in Bel Air also are available on Twitter @LAFD.

Los Angeles County has implemented an emergency mass notification called Alert LA County, which is used to contact residents and businesses via recorded phone messages, text messages, or e-mail messages in case of emergency. City of West Hollywood residents can sign up for updates online and follow the City of West Hollywood’s regular updates on Twitter at @wehocity.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, smoke from Southern California fires has caused poor air quality that affects all individuals in the areas of direct smoke and has an unhealthy impact on air quality. South Coast AQMD is providing updates regarding air quality on its website.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a “smoke advisory” that warns that throughout Los Angeles County, sensitive individuals, such as those with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory disease, should follow recommendations to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure and to limit physical exertion (whether indoor or outdoor), such as exercise. Updates will be provided on Twitter @lapublichealth.
