CORRECTION:  An earlier version of this story said that Planning Commissioners Sheila Lightfoot and Heidi Shink voted against this project last year. Actually they voted against it in 2015. The story has been corrected.

If you’re wondering what that condominium building going up next to Gelsons on North Kings Road is going to look like, you can find out here. Lorcan O’Herlihy, the architect has released new illustrations of the building, which drew strong opposition from neighborhood residents and antidevelopment activists went it went before the West Hollywood Planning Commission in in July 2015.

The four-story condominium building is right behind the Gelson’s grocery store on Santa Monica Boulevard. It will have 30 condo units, including two for low-income people and three for moderate-income people, and 58 parking spaces in an underground garage. It is replacing two single-family homes on adjacent lots.

The Planning Commission endorsed the project in a five-to-two vote, with then-commissioners Sheila Lightfoot and Heidi Shink voting against it. The images originally were published in The Architects Newspaper, a trade journal.

I’m not against properly sized condos (eons ago a friend called kings road as “condo hell”). I’m not against anything but ONE HUGE PROBLEM:

IT LOOKS TERRIBLE IN ARTISTS RENDERINGS…END RESULT ALWAYS WORSE!

IT SHOULD BE MORE BOX LIKE WITH BALCONY LIKE THE REST OF THE STREET.

QUOTING “NOT EVERY NEW BUILDING SHOULD BE A ‘STATEMENT’ PROJECT”
quoting the bard of personal taste, myself … each time a wacky building goes up in an ordinary dull location.

WOW, every now and then I get it right! About 6 years ago I was going to buy a unit in the condo next to this .You can actually see “my” recessed balcony in the picture. I decided not to because I felt one day they would replace those old houses. And I would go thru “heck” while they did it all AND lose my view Thank God!! The place looks nice and I hope those paying what must be a lot are happy there. The low income people certainly should be. Their neighbors paid for it.

Looks great. Now if Gelson’s will retain LOHA to redesign their exterior, the entire corner will improve .

Fact check? “When it went before the Planning Commission in July of last year…” and “Heidi Shine voted against it.” Shink was not on the Commission in July of last year, so those two statements can’t both be true.

Good catch! Shink and Lightfoot voted against the project in 2015. The story has been corrected to note that.

I’d like to know what’s up with the building on the Northeast corner of Sweetzer and Norton that’s had scaffolding up for many months? Are there lawsuits in play for shoddy new construction or what? Everyone keeps asking what the story is with this place.

where are all the cars?? Neither Kings Rd nor the Gelson’s parking lot are devoid of cars. It will just look like grunge within 6 months.

Another ugly building. Great! Those units facing Gelson’s parking lot will love it when the delivery and garbage trucks arrive daily

Interesting. In the rendering, the building looks far better than many of the other “modern crap box” condo buildings that have been recently approved. Far better than the Soviet prison block condos on Sunset at La Cienega. I can’t help but wonder what these units will start at. One million plus?
