Dancing at the Car Wash

Washing your car may not be fun. But watching some talented dancers do it at the Santa Palm Car Wash is likely to be quite entertaining.

Tomorrow night at 8 p.m. the Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre classic, “Parts & Labor,” will be performed at the Santa Palm Car Wash, 8787 Santa Monica Blvd. at Palm.

Originally staged in 1993, “Parts & Labor” explores America’s love/hate relationship with cars and features at its center a 1970’s Cadillac Coupe de Ville, which serves not just as a stage and prop, but also as an instrument. Percussionists from the band Antenna Repairmen will mic the car and play it.

In a press release describing the event, Duckler Dance Theatre says “‘Parts & Labor’ provides an artistic, perhaps sardonic, view as a local conversation. As the Los Angeles County highways seem to get more full by the day, area leaders have finally begun discussing solutions for the county’s congestion—but is it too late? Has our automobile dependency taken hold? We’ll see…”

Tickets, $28.90 for WeHo residents and $17.35 for students with IDs, can be purchased online. Valet parking is available for $10, however the site is accessible on the city’s free The PickUp shuttle.

Founded in 1985 by choreographer Heidi Duckler, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre has created dance experiences in extraordinary locations for three decades. Called the “reigning queen of site specific performance” by the Los Angeles Times, Duckler is focused on building audiences for the arts, especially in underserved communities. Heidi Duckler has created more than 200 dance pieces all over the world. Awards include a Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs COLA Award, California Arts Council Choreography Fellowship and National Endowment of the Arts American Masterpiece award.
