The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Services Detail will be conducting a DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoint in West Hollywood from 7 p.m. this coming Saturday until 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
In addition to removing intoxicated drivers from the roads, a focus of publicizing DUI checkpoints in advance is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.
The West Hollywood Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has the following safety tips:
• Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk – or worse, the risk of having a crash while driving.
• If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.
• If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, use public transportation or call one of your local sober ride home programs.
• Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life.
One transportation alternative for people enjoying nightlife in West Hollywood is The PickUp, which runs on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. and on selected holidays. The city also is offering summer “Sunday Funday” service in which The PickUp runs its regular route on Sundays from noon to 10 p.m. through Aug. 30. The PickUp is free and travels along Santa Monica Boulevard in a four-mile loop with ten stops in each direction between Robertson Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. There also are seven franchised taxi companies operating in the City of West Hollywood with more than 500 vehicles that are authorized to pick up passengers. A complete up-to-date list of taxi companies is available online. Travellers who have been drinking also can contact Uber or Lyft for a ride.

Matt – you are confusing the concepts of detention and search. There are two different constitutional standards for each of those police activities. Generally the police need reasonable suspicion to detain a person; and then they need probably cause to conduct a search. Your comments against the Supreme Court sounds like you want to practice citizen nullification of S Ct decisions you don’t agree with. Now that would be unconstitutional. We may not always agree with a S Ct decision but in the long run the US has thrived under its three equal branches of government system.
I’m glad you’re all thrilled with this new Draconianism. The Supreme Court of the 1990’s was an affront on every level. You’re still not allowed to be detained or searched without reasonable suspicion, meaning you should tell these pigs that they can arrest you or you’re moving on because you live in America.
Matt, the Supreme Court in 1990 found properly conducted sobriety check points to be constitutional. What’s your basis in stating that the constitution is being disregarded?
@Matt, you MUST be white? The world WE (other race than White) all live in dictates we are to obey officers of the law! Otherwise, we are roughed up, shot or arrested for “refusing to cooperate”. I am all for these checkpoints! Living in this “boystown” “bar row” area, it is way overdue! Pull the drinkers/drunks off the street-out of their cars and throw them in jail! Do the same for those who TEXT, TALK on their phones with disregard for the law and the safety of the public at large.
I’m sure they will want to do these checkpoints on Sunset Blvd too instead of always on Santa Monica Blvd, right???
They spend most of their time drinking coffe and texting. Just like a regular day on duty. How can the sheriffs drive and text, they should have to follow the laws like everyone else!
It is illegal for these thugs to stop a citizen without probable cause they have committed a crime. Refuse to cooperate with these people who are disregarding the constitution in the name of raising revenue. Americans are supposed to be free to move within our borders without fear of harassment.
