It was Dirk Schaffer, the Playgirl Man of the Year who came out after his selection and made a documentary about his life “Man of the Year” in 1995. Very sad. He was 52.

When the correct information is available and all parties have been contacted..they’ll let you know the details. Everything Ben Coleman said wasn’t based on fact. He looked to be dead 2-3 days. (Opinion). Probably under 50. (Opinion). In shape. (Opinion). Probably gay. (Opinion). Probably drug related. (Opinion). Parking enforcement probably passed him up. (Opinion). Not everything revolves around Weho nor do we need to know everything instantly like the world of Twitter and FB suggests. Thats how rumors and mistakes are made. So the sheriff told you they found a dead man at 2pm. So what if the police got… Read more »

JJ – at least the journalists of today are honest about it. Cronkite and his contemporaries were extremely biased, but they presented themselves as professional and trustworthy.

Ben Coleman also stated the male was younger than 50 although the Sheriffs provided his actual age. In addition Ben Coleman thought the guy was probably gay. I didn’t know you could identify who is straight and who is gay after they have died. Not more information, just a lot of speculation.

Why do journalist today feel it necessary to express their own opinions about a story? I long for the days of the Walter Cronkite type that just presented the news, the facts as they had them and we never knew their personal, private thoughts on any given matter. That presentation of the news came across much more professional and trustworthy.

Ben Coleman provided MORE details than you can usually pry out of the Sheriff Dept. None of this information would “hurt” an investigation and it may have helped the Sheriffs get more information. That’s a busy street with large apartment buildings and the 8000 Sunset shopping center at the corner with CB2/Trader Joe’s/Crunch etc. The street has lots of pedestrian traffic. Perhaps someone else saw this car/man before or at a time when he was still alive. Maybe – just maybe – someone may step forward to help with the investigation.

Ben Coleman provided all anyone would need to know. But the Sheriff’s station didn’t

Sheriff arrived at 11:45 AM, person who called it in had seen him the day before and called sheriff today when they noticed him again. Looked like he had been dead for 2-3 days. Man was in shape and looked younger than 50. Probably drug related. Pretty sure he was gay. Vehicle was black mid 90s VW Jetta. No tickets and no permit. Strange but likely parking enforcement saw a person sitting in the vehicle and passed it up.

And even stranger that the Sheriff’s station watch sergeant wasn’t willing to share any of those details with West Hollywood residents. But not surprising.

It was earlier than the time they told you. I drove north on Laurel today, between Fountsin & Sunset, around 12:15 pm. There were 6 – yes six – Sheriff cars on the street. I saw them interviewing one woman and the rest of the deputies sort of just standing around chatting.
