West Hollywood traffic will be slowed because of some street closures for the annual AIDS Walk on Sunday, which may attract as many as 25,000 people to West Hollywood.
Proceeds from the walk allow AIDS Project Los Angeles and the other organizations to provide food, housing, medical and dental care and counseling for people living with HIV and AIDS and prevention efforts to stop new infections.
AIDS Walk Los Angeles was the world’s first fundraising walk to benefit organizations dealing with AIDS. Since its inception in 1985, the walk has raised more than $77 million, including more than $2.5 million last year, to fight the disease in Los Angeles County, according to Ben Fordham, the walk’s director of communications.
The WeHo Sheriff’s Station reports the following closures or temporary blocks:
Saturday Street Closure:
San Vicente Boulevard between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue from 6 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday.
Sunday Street Closures:
- San Vicente Boulevard from Beverly Boulevard to Melrose Avenue (east side only) from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Robertson Boulevard from Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..
- La Peer Drive from Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard from 6 a.m. to noon.
- Santa Monica Boulevard from Doheny Drive to Holloway Drive from 6 a.m. to noon.
- La Cienega Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Melrose Avenue from 6 a.m. to noon.
- Melrose Place from La Cienega Boulevard to Orlando Avenue from 6 a.m. to noon.
- Melrose Avenue from San Vicente Boulevard to La Brea Avenue from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- La Brea Avenue from Melrose Avenue to Beverly Boulevard from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m..
- Beverly Boulevard from La Brea Avenue to San Vicente Boulevard from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m..
The hours during which streets are closed may be adjusted depending on the traffic.
During the event, Los Angeles Police Department officers will be at some intersections to allow vehicles to cross streets during periodic intervals. Such controlled cross traffic will be allowed at:
- Harper at Melrose (northbound and southbound)
- Crescent Heights at Melrose (northbound and southbound)
- Oakwood at Fairfax (eastbound and southbound)
- Crescent Heights at Beverly (northbound and southbound
- Sweetzer at Beverly (northbound and southbound)
- La Cienega at Beverly (southbound only)
The Sheriff’s Station notes that Rosewood Ave can provide east/west travel between controlled intersections, as well as Oakwood Ave. More information about routes during the event is available online.
This year’s event is the 30th annual AIDS Walk, the proceeds from which benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles. Participants can register for the walk online.
Finished my WALK and the World did not come to an end, and had a great time. West Hollywood came out in support. It’s SUNDAY most people are NOT working, unless you are a fundmentalist preacher, in which case I’m sure you’ll find plenty of suckers hating an unpopular minority group to put their $ in the collection plate! The AIDS walk benefits one group. The promoters who but this ludicrous ordeal up. They take over 30% for their fees. A walk – give me a break.
