Mark Hundahl, CEO of Frontiers Media, publisher of Frontiers, Southern California’s largest-circulation gay magazine, died Wednesday of lung cancer.

Hundahl and partners Bob Craig and David Stern launched IN Los Angeles, a gay magazine, in 1997, and in 2007 he and Stern bought Frontiers. Frontiers, which claims a biweekly circulation of 35,000 copies, is distributed from Los Angeles to San Diego. Stern remains publisher of Frontiers

Hundahl has had a diverse business background. In 1983 he bought a nightclub in Hollywood called Probe on Highland Avenue, which featured performers such as Jennifer Holliday and Madonna and became the center of Los Angeles gay nightlife. Hundahl also was senior strategist at Passport Consulting, a business focused on identifying media opportunities in China. His career also included production of television commercials, investment in cross platform media companies and work with the digital division of Emmis Communications.

Mark’s wife Bethany and her family hosted a warm and wonderful small memorial service this afternoon. Great stories and memories all around. We are planning a larger memorial for Mark on the 19th at 2PM in the House of Blues Foundation Room on Sunset. The sweet HOB are comping the room. If you knew Mark and would like an invite, e-mail me at:

Another sad loss. Mark was a straight guy who really loved the gay community. Mark and the PROBE were inseparable in the 1980’s. The days of STUDIO ONE and the PROBE are sadly fading into memories of those of us who are left to remember a time of lights, music, dance and finding fraternal brotherhood in the night life……
